Beekeeper Confidential | Episode 4

I had the privilege of visiting the apiary of one of my favorite local beekeepers, Ken Matley. We inspected a colony, talked frame construction, tasted honey, and Ken shared a wealth of fascinating insights on Warre hives and their creator, Emile Warre.

Ken keeps warre, langstroth and topbar hives in Portland and West Linn. His Portland apiary is adorned with charming elements that make it feel right out of an old children's tale. He has a unique collection of creepy gnome statues that guard his hives. His bee watering station would make for a perfect fairy lagoon, complete with a water slide! His dog Agetha keeps watch over the apiary, eating any stray bees that come her way. Lush greenery wraps around the garden and makes you feel like you are deep in the woods, not in the city.

I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed making it!
